Which 1979 single by The Sugarhill Gang is widely recognized as hip hop’s first major commercial hit?

The story behind the answer

The Sugarhill Gang’s 1979 single “Rapper’s Delight” is widely recognized as hip hop’s first major commercial hit.

Released by Sugar Hill Records in September 1979, the track brought an extended rap performance to a mainstream record-buying audience. Its backing track interpolated the Chic song “Good Times,” performed by studio musicians rather than simply using the original recording. The song’s long runtime was unusual for a hit single, although shorter edits were also issued.

“Rapper’s Delight” did not literally constitute the first rap recording. Earlier records, including party-oriented releases by pioneering DJs and MCs, had already documented hip hop’s developing style. Its historical importance is that it turned a local New York culture into a nationally visible commercial genre.

The Sugarhill Gang’s success helped establish Sugar Hill Records and encouraged record companies to sign more rap artists. The song is often discussed alongside Kurtis Blow’s “The Breaks,” another early commercial breakthrough, but they are different releases.
