Answer
The Strelzyk-Wetzel balloon escape
The Strelzyk-Wetzel balloon escape was the 1979 escape from East Germany using a homemade hot-air balloon.
In the early hours of 16 September 1979, families led by Peter Strelzyk and Günter Wetzel launched a large homemade balloon near Pößneck in East Germany. The balloon carried eight people, including four children, across the border and landed in West Germany after roughly 28 minutes in the air.
The group had tested earlier designs and secretly assembled the final balloon from purchased and privately sewn fabric. Their escape demonstrated the extraordinary lengths some East Germans took to bypass the Berlin Wall and the wider fortified border system.
The escape was later dramatized in films, which sometimes alter details for suspense. It also differed from tunnel escapes, forged-document operations, and attempts to cross the Wall directly. The balloon crossed the broader inner German border rather than flying over Berlin itself.
