Donna Summer’s 1979 album containing “Hot Stuff” and “Bad Girls” was Bad Girls.
Released as Summer’s seventh studio album, Bad Girls blended disco with rock, funk, and pop influences. The album was produced chiefly by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, who had already helped shape Summer’s breakthrough sound. Its title track and “Hot Stuff” became two of the most prominent songs of her career.
Bad Girls reached number one on the US Billboard 200 and was certified multi-platinum by the RIAA. “Hot Stuff” won the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, an unusual achievement for a singer strongly associated with disco.
The album should not be confused with Summer’s 1979 compilation On the Radio: Greatest Hits Volumes I & II. That compilation also drew from the same period, but Bad Girls is the studio album that contains both title tracks. The album’s broad stylistic range helped show that disco could coexist with rock-oriented production and mainstream pop songwriting.
