Chic’s 1978 disco single featuring the Ferrari lyric was “Le Freak.”
Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards wrote the song after being turned away from Studio 54 on New Year’s Eve. The original chorus reportedly used an expletive aimed at the club, but the writers changed it to the more radio-friendly phrase “Le Freak.”
The song became Chic’s biggest U.S. hit. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and also topped the disco and soul charts. The recording’s tightly arranged guitar, bass, and string parts became a model of late-1970s dance production.
The Ferrari line appears in the song’s verse rather than its chorus. “Le Freak” is also frequently discussed as a bridge between disco and later dance-pop, while Chic’s musicianship influenced funk, hip-hop, and electronic music.
