Which 1977 Bee Gees song was the group’s first Billboard Hot 100 number one?
Answer
How Deep Is Your Love
Answer
How Deep Is Your Love
“How Deep Is Your Love” was the Bee Gees’ first Billboard Hot 100 number one.
The brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb wrote the song for the soundtrack of Saturday Night Fever. The Bee Gees recorded it as a smooth, restrained ballad, contrasting with the more overtly dance-driven songs that later became associated with the group’s disco period.
Released in 1977, “How Deep Is Your Love” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in December of that year. It became the first of six consecutive U.S. number-one singles credited to the Bee Gees during their peak soundtrack and disco success.
A common mix-up is placing “Stayin’ Alive” first because it is the most recognizable Saturday Night Fever track. “Stayin’ Alive” reached number one afterward. “Night Fever” also topped the chart in 1978, but “How Deep Is Your Love” opened the Bee Gees’ run of Hot 100 leaders.
