Which 1976 Bee Gees song became their first single to top the US dance chart?

The story behind the answer

The Bee Gees’ “You Should Be Dancing” became their first single to top the US dance chart in 1976.

Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb wrote the song, which appeared on the album Children of the World. Its prominent falsetto vocals, pulsing bass, and rhythmically clipped guitar helped move the Bee Gees toward a more explicitly disco-oriented sound.

The single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a major international success. It predates the group’s best-known Saturday Night Fever recordings, although it was later included on compilations connected with the disco era.

A common mix-up is to identify “Stayin’ Alive” as the Bee Gees’ first major disco single. That song was more closely associated with Saturday Night Fever and was released later, in 1977. “You Should Be Dancing” was already an important dance-floor success before that soundtrack era.
