Answer
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
The 1975 film set in a psychiatric hospital that won the Big Five Oscars is One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
Directed by Miloš Forman, the film stars Jack Nicholson as Randle McMurphy, a rebellious inmate who is transferred to a psychiatric institution, and Louise Fletcher as the controlling Nurse Ratched. It was adapted from Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel, although the screenplay takes a somewhat different approach to the story and its point of view.
The psychiatric hospital setting was unusually authentic: much of the film was shot inside Oregon State Hospital in Salem, the same institution associated with the novel’s setting. Production began in January 1975 after a long development period; Kirk Douglas had initially pursued the project before his son Michael Douglas became a producer.
The film won Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Adapted Screenplay at the 48th Academy Awards. That “Big Five” achievement is rare: only It Happened One Night and The Silence of the Lambs had also accomplished it. The film was selected for the National Film Registry in 1993.
