The 1972 musical film starring Liza Minnelli that won eight Academy Awards is Cabaret.
Directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse, Cabaret is set in Berlin during the early 1930s as the Nazi Party gains influence. Liza Minnelli plays Sally Bowles, an American performer at the Kit Kat Klub, while Michael York plays Brian Roberts, a writer who becomes involved in her turbulent world. Joel Grey plays the club’s unsettling Master of Ceremonies.
The film was adapted from the stage musical by Joe Masteroff, John Kander, and Fred Ebb. That musical drew on Christopher Isherwood’s Berlin stories and the earlier play I Am a Camera. Songs such as “Willkommen,” “Mein Herr,” and “Maybe This Time” combine nightclub spectacle with the story’s increasingly ominous political background.
Cabaret received ten Oscar nominations and won eight, including Best Director for Fosse, Best Actress for Minnelli, and Best Supporting Actor for Grey. It did not win Best Picture, but it holds the record for the most Oscars won by a film that was not awarded that prize.
