Which 1964 earthquake caused a huge tsunami across Alaska and the Pacific?
Answer
Great Alaska earthquake
Answer
Great Alaska earthquake
The 1964 earthquake that caused a huge tsunami across Alaska and the Pacific was the Great Alaska earthquake.
It struck on 27 March 1964, Good Friday, in southern Alaska. With a magnitude of 9.2, it remains the strongest earthquake ever recorded in North America and the second-largest instrumentally recorded earthquake worldwide.
The earthquake ruptured part of the Alaska–Aleutian megathrust, where the Pacific Plate is forced beneath the North American Plate. Vertical seafloor displacement generated a tsunami that struck Alaska and travelled across the Pacific Ocean.
The event caused landslides, ground failure, coastal subsidence, and major damage in Anchorage, Valdez, and other communities. Tsunami waves also reached British Columbia, the western United States, and Hawaii.
