Which 1951 Hudson model is the character Doc Hudson based on in Pixar's Cars?

The story behind the answer

Doc Hudson is based on the 1951 Hudson Hornet in Pixar's Cars.

Doc is a retired racing champion who runs a medical clinic in Radiator Springs. His vehicle design reflects the Hudson Hornet, a real American car famous for its “Fabulous Hudson Hornet” racing identity and its success in early stock-car competition.

In the film, Doc's past is initially hidden from Lightning McQueen. He eventually reveals that he won three Piston Cups before a serious crash ended his racing career. His experience gives him a perspective on fame, injury, and the way racing organizations can discard older competitors.

Paul Newman provided Doc Hudson's voice in the first Cars film. Newman had a major interest in motor racing and competed professionally, making the role especially fitting. Doc does not appear as a living character in Cars 2, but his legacy strongly influences Lightning's choices in Cars 3.
