Which 1950s American car inspired Pixar’s character Doc Hudson?

The story behind the answer

Pixar’s character Doc Hudson was inspired by the Hudson Hornet, especially the 1951 model.

The Hudson Hornet was an American automobile produced by Hudson Motor Car Company during the early 1950s. Its “step-down” design placed the passenger compartment lower within the body, contributing to a distinctive appearance and a low center of gravity.

The real Hornet became famous in stock-car racing. Drivers such as Herb Thomas achieved major success with Hudson Hornets, helping create the historical basis for Doc’s identity as the Fabulous Hudson Hornet. In Cars, Doc is said to have won three Piston Cups before a crash ended his racing career.

Doc’s design is not a completely exact replica of one production car, but it clearly uses the Hudson Hornet as its foundation. This is why identifying him only as a generic vintage race car misses the specific automotive reference. Paul Newman voiced the character in the first film.
