Answer
1950 Assam–Tibet earthquake
Answer
1950 Assam–Tibet earthquake
The 1950 Assam–Tibet earthquake was one of the strongest continental earthquakes ever recorded.
It struck on 15 August 1950 in the border region between Assam, India, and Tibet. Its estimated moment magnitude was 8.6, making it comparable in size to some of the world’s largest subduction earthquakes even though it occurred within a continental collision zone.
The event caused severe shaking, landslides, ground cracking, and damage across a large, rugged region. Landslides dammed rivers and created serious secondary hazards. Because the epicentral area was remote and communications were limited, early reports varied substantially.
The earthquake resulted from deformation associated with the ongoing collision of the Indian Plate with the Eurasian Plate. It is sometimes called the Assam earthquake or Assam–Tibet earthquake; these names refer to the same 1950 event.
