Which 1945 battle is generally regarded as the last major battle of the Pacific War?
Answer
Battle of Okinawa
Answer
Battle of Okinawa
The Battle of Okinawa is generally regarded as the last major battle of the Pacific War.
Fought from 1 April to 22 June 1945, it was the largest amphibious assault of the Pacific campaign. United States and Allied forces captured Okinawa after exceptionally heavy fighting against Japanese army and naval units, as well as severe civilian losses.
Okinawa’s casualties and the determined Japanese defense strongly influenced Allied planning for a possible invasion of Japan’s home islands. The expected cost of Operation Downfall was one factor in the wider strategic debate that followed the atomic bombings and the Soviet entry into the war.
The battle ended weeks before Japan’s surrender announcement, so Okinawa was not the final military action connected with the war. Fighting and surrender ceremonies continued in other areas after 15 August, but Okinawa remains the final major campaign-scale battle.
