What was the codename for the planned first stage of Operation Downfall, the invasion of Kyushu?

The story behind the answer

Operation Olympic was the codename for the planned first stage of Operation Downfall, the proposed Allied invasion of Kyushu.

The operation was scheduled to begin on 1 November 1945. Allied forces intended to land on southern Kyushu, seize ports and airfields, and build a base for later operations against the rest of Japan. The planned invasion was never launched because Japan surrendered in August.

The second stage of Downfall was Operation Coronet, scheduled for March 1946 and aimed at the Kanto Plain near Tokyo. Olympic and Coronet are therefore related but different plans. Operation Downfall was the overall invasion concept, not the name of either individual phase.

Planning for Olympic assumed intense Japanese resistance, including the use of military units and civilian defense forces. The eventual surrender made the invasion unnecessary, though Allied planners continued preparations until Japan accepted the Potsdam Declaration and formalized its surrender.
