Which 1944 conference established the framework for the IMF and World Bank?

The story behind the answer

The 1944 conference that established the framework for the IMF and World Bank was the Bretton Woods Conference.

Officially called the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference, it took place at the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, from July 1 to 22, 1944. Delegates from 44 Allied countries attended while World War II was still underway.

The conference aimed to prevent the competitive devaluations, trade barriers, and financial instability associated with the interwar period. Its agreements created the International Monetary Fund to support monetary cooperation and balance-of-payments stability, and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which became the core of the World Bank Group.

A common mix-up is to say that the conference itself created the modern World Bank Group in its present form. The original institution was the IBRD; other World Bank Group bodies were established later. The Bretton Woods system also linked currencies to the U.S. dollar, which was convertible into gold until the system ended in the early 1970s.
