Which 1936 flower did Georgia O'Keeffe paint in her famous Jimson Weed series?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe painted jimson weed in her famous Jimson Weed series, including Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1.

Jimson weed is a flowering plant also known as Datura stramonium. O'Keeffe enlarged its white trumpet-shaped flower so that the blossom fills much of the composition. This close, magnified view is characteristic of the flower paintings that made her work widely recognizable.

Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 was painted in 1932, not 1936, and later became one of O'Keeffe’s most valuable works. The artist made many flower paintings, so viewers sometimes substitute more familiar subjects such as poppies, irises, or calla lilies.

The series’ title identifies the plant directly. Its flowers are visually delicate, but jimson weed is also a poisonous plant, an aspect that adds botanical context without changing the painting’s subject.
