Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1
Answer
Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1
Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 set an auction record for a female artist in 2014.
O’Keeffe painted Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 in 1932. It depicts a large white jimson weed flower against a pale background, using the close-up scale that made many of her flower paintings appear monumental and nearly abstract.
In November 2014, the painting sold at Sotheby’s in New York for $44.4 million, including the buyer’s premium. That sale established a record price paid at auction for a work by a female artist at the time.
The work is sometimes called simply Jimson Weed, but its full title includes White Flower No. 1. It should not be confused with Red Canna or Black Iris, two other well-known O’Keeffe flower paintings.
