Which 1932 Georgia O'Keeffe painting set a then-record auction price for a work by a woman in 2014?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe’s Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 set a record auction price for a work by a woman in 2014.

O'Keeffe painted Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 in 1932. The large white jimson weed blossom is shown against a dark background, with the flower enlarged so that its trumpet-like form fills much of the canvas. The painting sold at Sotheby’s in New York in November 2014 for $44.4 million.

That sale established a then-record auction price for a work by a female artist. It surpassed the previous record and drew renewed attention to O'Keeffe’s place in both American art history and the international art market.

The painting is often discussed alongside O'Keeffe’s flower paintings, but she rejected the idea that they should be read only as symbolic or sensual images. She repeatedly emphasized close looking: enlarging a flower made viewers notice details they might otherwise overlook. The title also distinguishes this work from her many other white-flower paintings.
