Georgia O'Keeffe's 1932 painting depicting a white flower against a dark background is Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1.
The work presents a large jimson weed blossom with sharply defined white petals. O'Keeffe often enlarged flowers so that viewers had to confront their forms and structures at close range. Her flower paintings are frequently discussed in relation to abstraction, although she consistently rejected the idea that they were simply enlarged versions of human anatomy.
The painting became especially famous after it was sold at auction for $44.4 million in 2014, then a record price for any female artist's artwork. The title is sometimes shortened to Jimson Weed, but the full catalog title identifies it as White Flower No. 1. It is not the same work as her 1930 painting Black Iris.
