Which 1932 Georgia O’Keeffe painting became the most expensive artwork by a female artist when it sold in 2014?

The story behind the answer

Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 became the most expensive artwork by a female artist when it sold in 2014.

O’Keeffe painted the large white jimson weed flower in 1932. The work presents a single trumpet-shaped bloom against a dark background, using close-up scale to make an ordinary Southwestern plant appear monumental.

The painting sold at Sotheby’s in New York on November 20, 2014, for $44.4 million, including the buyer’s premium. It was purchased by the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, founded by Alice Walton.

The record later changed as other works by women artists reached higher prices, so the 2014 description is historical rather than permanent. The painting is also sometimes called simply Jimson Weed, but its full title is Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1.
