Which 1932 Georgia O'Keeffe painting became one of the most expensive works by a female artist at auction?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe's Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 became one of the most expensive works by a female artist at auction. O'Keeffe painted it in 1932, and the large white jimson weed flower dominates the composition against a dark background.

The painting gained exceptional attention when it was sold at Sotheby's in New York in 2014 for $44.4 million, including the buyer's premium. That sale established a record for a work by a female artist at auction at the time. The work had been given to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum by the artist's husband, Alfred Stieglitz, and was later sold by the museum.

The title is sometimes shortened to Jimson Weed, but the complete title includes White Flower No. 1. It should not be confused with O'Keeffe's Black Iris paintings or her Red Canna series, which also enlarge botanical forms.
