Which 1931 statute is noted as a major step in Canada's sovereignty?

The story behind the answer

The 1931 statute recognized as a major step in Canada’s sovereignty was the Statute of Westminster.

The British Parliament passed the Statute of Westminster on December 11, 1931. It established that the self-governing Dominions—including Canada—were legally equal to the United Kingdom in their domestic and external affairs, rather than subordinate colonies.

The statute followed the 1926 Balfour Declaration and the Imperial Conferences of 1926 and 1930. It meant that Canadian laws could no longer be invalidated simply because they conflicted with British law, and Canada could legislate independently in most areas.

The statute did not complete Canada’s constitutional independence. Canadian leaders retained reservations about changing the Constitution, so the UK Parliament continued to amend Canada’s constitutional law until the Constitution was patriated in 1982. That is why the Canada Act 1982, rather than the 1931 statute, is usually described as the final constitutional break.
