Which 1878 organization did Thomas Edison help found to develop electric lighting?

The story behind the answer

Thomas Edison helped found the Edison Electric Light Company in 1878 to develop and commercialize electric lighting. The company provided financial support for Edison’s lighting research and helped organize the business side of the project.

Edison’s goal was not merely to create a lamp. He aimed to build a complete system, including generators, wiring, switches, meters, and safe distribution. Investors and engineers associated with the company supported the lengthy experimental process needed to make that system practical.

The company’s name is often confused with Edison General Electric, which was formed later, in 1889. Edison General Electric subsequently became part of the corporate history that led to General Electric in 1892.

The Edison Electric Light Company therefore belongs to the early development stage of Edison’s lighting enterprise. It should not be treated as the same organization as the later electric utility companies that operated individual power systems.
