Which 1877 invention made Thomas Edison famous for recording and reproducing sound?

The story behind the answer

The phonograph made Thomas Edison famous for recording and reproducing sound in 1877.

Edison’s phonograph was among the first devices able to record sound and play it back. Its early design used a stylus and a rotating cylinder on which sound vibrations were mechanically traced. The machine’s ability to reproduce the human voice attracted immediate attention and helped make Edison internationally famous.

The phonograph is sometimes confused with the kinetoscope, which Edison later associated with moving-picture viewing. The two inventions belonged to different technologies: the phonograph concerned sound, while the kinetoscope displayed motion pictures to an individual viewer.

Edison continued improving recording technology, and phonographs eventually became used for music, dictation, entertainment, and commercial recordings.
