Which 1869 trail carried settlers and freight from the Salt Lake Valley to California?

The story behind the answer

The California Trail carried settlers and freight from the Salt Lake Valley and other starting points toward California beginning in the 1840s.

The trail was not one single road but a network of routes across the Great Plains, Rocky Mountains, and Great Basin. It followed parts of the Oregon Trail before dividing toward destinations such as Sacramento and the goldfields.

Its traffic increased sharply after the California Gold Rush began in 1848. Thousands of emigrants traveled in wagon parties, while others used pack animals or later crossed by alternative routes.

The California Trail is often confused with the Oregon Trail because they shared early segments and both began near the Missouri River. Their destinations differed: the California Trail led primarily to California, while the Oregon Trail led to the Pacific Northwest.
