Which 1787 gathering drafted the U.S. Constitution in the history commemorated by America250?

The story behind the answer

The Constitutional Convention drafted the U.S. Constitution in 1787.

Delegates met in Philadelphia from May 25 to September 17, 1787. The meeting was initially called to revise the Articles of Confederation, but the delegates ultimately designed an entirely new framework for the federal government.

George Washington presided over the convention. Important participants included James Madison, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, and Gouverneur Morris, who helped shape or draft key provisions.

The Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787, but it did not take effect immediately. Nine states had to ratify it, and the new federal government began operating in 1789. The convention is often called the Philadelphia Convention or the Federal Convention.
