In which city did delegates hold the 1787 Constitutional Convention?

The story behind the answer

Delegates held the 1787 Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Meetings took place in the Pennsylvania State House, now called Independence Hall, from May 25 to September 17.

The convention was initially called to revise the Articles of Confederation, whose weak central government could not reliably raise revenue or regulate interstate trade. Delegates instead designed an entirely new Constitution creating separate legislative, executive and judicial branches.

Fifty-five delegates attended at different times, although only 39 signed the final document. George Washington presided, James Madison kept influential notes, and compromises settled disputes over representation and slavery. The Connecticut Compromise created a two-house Congress with proportional representation in the House and equal state representation in the Senate.

The Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787, then sent to state conventions for ratification. It became operative after New Hampshire supplied the ninth ratification in June 1788, and the new government began in 1789.
