Which 1783 treaty formally ended the American Revolutionary War?

The story behind the answer

The Treaty of Paris formally ended the American Revolutionary War in 1783.

Representatives of the United States and Great Britain signed the peace treaty on September 3, 1783. Britain recognized the United States as an independent nation and accepted boundaries extending west to the Mississippi River, north to the Great Lakes, and south to Spanish Florida.

The American negotiating team included Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, John Jay, and Henry Laurens. The treaty followed the military defeat of British forces at Yorktown but required extended negotiations before peace became official.

The agreement also addressed fishing rights, debts, prisoners, and the treatment of Loyalists. Its provisions did not resolve every conflict between Britain and the new United States, but it established the international recognition that completed the Revolution’s founding process commemorated by America250.
