Which 1777 battle is widely regarded as a turning point in the American Revolution?

The story behind the answer

The Battle of Saratoga is widely regarded as a turning point in the American Revolution.

The Battles of Saratoga took place in New York in September and October 1777. American forces under General Horatio Gates defeated a British army commanded by General John Burgoyne, whose campaign aimed to divide New England from the other colonies.

Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga on October 17, 1777. The victory demonstrated that the Continental Army could defeat a major British force in the field. It also encouraged France to openly ally with the American revolutionary cause.

Saratoga did not end the war; fighting continued for years. French military, naval, and financial assistance became especially important later, including during the Yorktown campaign. The battle is therefore remembered both for its military result and for its diplomatic consequences.
