Which war did the Treaty of Paris of 1783 formally end for the United States?
Answer
American Revolutionary War
Answer
American Revolutionary War
The Treaty of Paris of 1783 formally ended the American Revolutionary War for the United States.
The war began in 1775 as fighting between Great Britain and its 13 North American colonies. The conflict grew from disputes over taxation, representation, imperial authority, and colonial self-government. The Declaration of Independence transformed the rebellion into a declared war for national independence in 1776.
American and French forces forced the surrender of a major British army at Yorktown in 1781, but military and diplomatic activity continued afterward. The 1783 treaty concluded the conflict between Britain and the United States and recognized American independence.
The war is also called the American War of Independence. It should not be confused with the French and Indian War, which ended in 1763 and preceded the Revolution, or the War of 1812, fought decades later.
