Answer
Battle of Mikatagahara
Answer
Battle of Mikatagahara
The Battle of Mikatagahara in 1572 saw Takeda Shingen defeat Tokugawa Ieyasu near Hamamatsu.
Takeda Shingen moved south from his lands in Kai and Shinano while advancing toward Kyoto. Tokugawa Ieyasu, then based at Hamamatsu Castle, chose to attack the passing Takeda army on the Mikatagahara plateau despite being heavily outnumbered.
The decision resulted in a severe Tokugawa defeat on 25 January 1573. Ieyasu’s army broke, and he narrowly escaped back to Hamamatsu. Later stories say he ordered a portrait showing his grim expression after the defeat, although the painting’s history is debated.
The battle demonstrated the strength of the Takeda cavalry and Shingen’s operational skill. Shingen died in 1573 before completing his western advance, and the Takeda house later collapsed after defeat by Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu at Tenmokuzan in 1582. Mikatagahara is distinct from Nagashino, fought three years later.
