Which 1561 battle at Kawanakajima is famous for the clash between Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin?

The story behind the answer

The Fourth Battle of Kawanakajima was the 1561 clash between Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin.

The battle took place on 18 October 1561 in northern Shinano, near the Chikuma and Sai rivers. It was the largest and most famous of five encounters fought between the Takeda and Uesugi clans over control of the region.

Later tradition gives the battle a dramatic single-combat scene in which Kenshin rode into Shingen’s headquarters and struck at him with a sword, while Shingen parried with an iron war fan. Historians treat the episode cautiously because the best-known versions were recorded later.

The engagement ended without a decisive strategic victory, although both armies suffered heavy losses. Kawanakajima is often confused with Nagashino, where Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu defeated the Takeda in 1575.
