Which 1494 event began the Italian Wars when King Charles VIII invaded the Italian peninsula?

The story behind the answer

The French invasion of Italy in 1494 began the Italian Wars when King Charles VIII entered the Italian peninsula.

Charles VIII claimed the Angevin right to the Kingdom of Naples and launched his expedition in September 1494. His army crossed the Alps and moved rapidly through Italy, exposing the political fragmentation of the peninsula and alarming the major Italian states.

The invasion helped end the relative stability created by the Peace of Lodi in 1454. Milan initially supported Charles against Naples, but opposition soon formed among Venice, Milan, the papacy, and other powers. Charles captured Naples in early 1495, though a coalition forced his retreat.

The Italian Wars continued intermittently until 1559 and drew France, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire, the papacy, and Italian states into repeated conflicts. They also accelerated the movement of Renaissance artists and ideas across Europe.
