Which 1223 battle ended a major Mongol victory over Rus’ princes and their Cuman allies?

The story behind the answer

The 1223 battle that ended in a major Mongol victory over Rus’ princes and their Cuman allies was the Battle of the Kalka River.

The battle took place on 31 May 1223 during an expedition led by the Mongol commanders Subutai and Jebe. Mongol forces had pursued the Cumans across the steppe, and several Rus’ princes joined the Cumans against them. The resulting coalition was defeated near the Kalka River, probably in the region of the Sea of Azov.

The Mongols used mobility, deception, and a controlled retreat to separate and exhaust the coalition. Many Rus’ leaders were killed or captured, and the defeat demonstrated the danger posed by Mongol armies even before the main invasion of Rus’ in the 1230s and 1240s.

The battle did not immediately establish Mongol rule over the Rus’ principalities. It was an expeditionary victory, followed later by Batu Khan’s conquest. It is also distinct from the 1241 Battle of Legnica in Poland.
