Which 1211 battle marked the first major Mongol victory over the Jin dynasty?

The story behind the answer

The 1211 Battle of Yehuling marked the first major Mongol victory over the Jin dynasty. It was fought during Genghis Khan’s opening invasion of Jin-controlled northern China, near present-day Zhangjiakou in Hebei Province.

The Mongols exploited weaknesses in the Jin defensive system along the frontier. Jin forces were spread across numerous fortifications, while Genghis Khan concentrated his cavalry against vulnerable positions. Mongol commanders, including Muqali and Jebe, helped break the much larger Jin army in difficult terrain where the Jin force struggled to coordinate.

Yehuling is sometimes discussed as part of a broader 1211 campaign that included the battles of Wusha Fortress, Huan’erzui, and Huihe Fortress. That can cause confusion, but “Battle of Yehuling” is the standard name for the decisive engagement and is the canonical answer to this question. The defeat badly weakened Jin power, although the dynasty survived until 1234.
