Which 1185 naval battle ended the Genpei War and destroyed the Taira clan’s political power?

The story behind the answer

The 1185 naval Battle of Dan-no-ura ended the Genpei War and destroyed the Taira clan’s political power.

The battle took place in the Shimonoseki Strait between forces supporting the Minamoto and Taira clans. The Minamoto fleet ultimately prevailed, helped by changing tides and the defection of Taira-aligned local forces. The Taira defeat ended their struggle with the Minamoto for control of Japan.

The battle is closely connected with the fate of Emperor Antoku, a child emperor associated with the Taira side. According to historical accounts, he died during the defeat. The imperial regalia, including the sacred sword, became part of later stories about the event.

The Minamoto victory enabled Minamoto no Yoritomo to establish military dominance from Kamakura. The Genpei War therefore marks a major transition from aristocratic court dominance toward warrior government.
