Where was ZZ Top founded?

The story behind the answer

ZZ Top was founded in Houston, Texas. Billy Gibbons formed the band there in 1969 after gaining local recognition with his earlier group, the Moving Sidewalks.

The first version of ZZ Top included Gibbons, bassist-keyboardist Lanier Greig, and drummer Dan Mitchell. The lineup soon changed: Dusty Hill replaced Greig, and Frank Beard became the drummer. Gibbons, Hill, and Beard then formed the classic trio that remained together for more than five decades.

Houston shaped the band’s early musical identity. Gibbons had already become part of the city’s blues and rock scene, and the Moving Sidewalks had opened for acts including the Doors and Jimi Hendrix. ZZ Top later developed its distinctive blend of blues rock, boogie, hard rock, and Southern rock.

Some listeners associate ZZ Top primarily with Texas generally, but Houston is the specific founding city. The band’s Texas identity remained central to its image, sound, and lyrics throughout its career.
