Where was the United States Constitution signed on September 17, 1787?
Answer
Independence Hall
Answer
Independence Hall
The United States Constitution was signed at Independence Hall on September 17, 1787.
The signing took place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the building then known as the Pennsylvania State House. Delegates had met there during the Constitutional Convention, which lasted from May 25 to September 17, 1787.
Thirty-nine delegates signed the completed Constitution. They represented 12 states; Rhode Island did not send delegates to the convention. George Washington, who presided over the convention, signed first, followed by other delegates.
The building later became known as Independence Hall because the Declaration of Independence had also been adopted there in 1776. This shared location links two foundational documents in United States history, although they were created 11 years apart.
