Where was the band Yes founded?

The story behind the answer

The band Yes was founded in London, England. The progressive-rock group formed there in 1968 after singer Jon Anderson met bassist Chris Squire in London's Soho district.

Anderson and Squire began developing songs together and assembled the original Yes lineup with guitarist Peter Banks, drummer Bill Bruford, and keyboardist Tony Kaye. The musicians rehearsed at the Lucky Horseshoe café on Shaftesbury Avenue before performing under the name Yes in the summer of 1968. Their first album, Yes, followed in 1969.

The answer is sometimes confused with the band's later international identity: Yes became strongly associated with British progressive rock and achieved major success in the United States, but its origin was firmly London-based. The group became known for long, intricate compositions, elaborate arrangements, and albums such as The Yes Album, Fragile, and Close to the Edge.
