Where was the band Rush founded?

The story behind the answer

Rush was founded in Toronto, Ontario, in 1968.

Guitarist Alex Lifeson and drummer John Rutsey formed the group in Toronto’s Willowdale neighbourhood in August 1968, initially with bassist and vocalist Jeff Jones. Jones soon departed, and Lifeson’s schoolmate Geddy Lee took over bass and lead vocals. The early band played blues-rock covers before developing its own hard-rock material.

Rush performed its first concert in September 1968 at the Coff-Inn, a youth centre in the basement of St. Theodore of Canterbury Anglican Church. The band reportedly had no name when the booking was made; “Rush” was suggested by Rutsey’s brother, Bill. This Toronto origin is sometimes obscured because the group later became an international progressive-rock institution.

The classic Rush lineup was not complete until July 1974, when Neil Peart replaced Rutsey. That trio—Lee, Lifeson, and Peart—defined the band’s best-known era. Rush’s self-titled debut album appeared in March 1974, before Peart joined, and was recorded and released through Toronto’s independent music network.
