Where was the band King Crimson founded?

The story behind the answer

King Crimson was founded in London. The progressive rock band formed there in 1968, led by guitarist Robert Fripp, drummer Michael Giles, bassist Greg Lake, multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald, and lyricist Peter Sinfield.

The group’s first major public breakthrough came with its 1969 debut album, In the Court of the Crimson King. Its dramatic blend of rock, jazz, classical music, and experimental sounds helped define early progressive rock.

King Crimson played its first live show at London’s Speakeasy Club on April 9, 1969. Although the lineup changed repeatedly—and Fripp was the only constant member—the band remained closely associated with adventurous, technically ambitious music.

A common mix-up is confusing the band’s founding city with its members’ individual hometowns. King Crimson was an English band formed in London, even though its musicians came from different places and later performed internationally.
