Where was the band Caravan founded?
Answer
Kent
Answer
Kent
Caravan was founded in Kent, England, in 1968.
The band emerged from the Canterbury music scene, a creative network that also produced groups such as Soft Machine and the Wilde Flowers. Its founding lineup consisted of Pye Hastings, Richard Sinclair, David Sinclair, and Richard Coughlan, all connected with the earlier Wilde Flowers.
Although Caravan is often described more specifically as a Canterbury band, its earliest base was in Whitstable, Kent, where the musicians rented a house and wrote and rehearsed together. That is why both “Canterbury” and “Kent” may appear in accounts of the group’s origin, with Kent being the broader geographical answer.
Caravan became a leading Canterbury-scene act by combining progressive rock with jazz, psychedelia, and classical influences. Their best-known early album, In the Land of Grey and Pink, was released by Decca in 1971.
