Where was Rush founded?

The story behind the answer

Rush was founded in Toronto, Canada, in August 1968. Guitarist Alex Lifeson formed the band in the Willowdale neighborhood with drummer John Rutsey and bassist Jeff Jones.

Jones soon left and was replaced by Geddy Lee, creating the early Lifeson-Lee-Rutsey lineup. Rush spent several years playing Toronto-area clubs, school dances, and small local venues before releasing its debut single, a cover of Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away,” in 1973.

The band’s self-titled debut album followed in 1974. Later that year, Neil Peart replaced Rutsey, establishing the classic trio associated with Rush’s progressive-rock sound. Toronto remained central to the band’s identity even after international success: Rush became one of Canada’s most influential rock exports while retaining strong ties to its hometown.

A common mix-up is confusing the band’s origin with its later recording and touring history. Rush was not founded in the United States or in a later progressive-rock hub; its roots were firmly in Toronto’s Willowdale community.
