Where was Nelson Mandela arrested in 1962?

The story behind the answer

Nelson Mandela was arrested near Howick in Natal in August 1962.

At the time, Mandela was travelling undercover after returning secretly to South Africa from military and political training abroad. He had been working to organize resistance to apartheid and had already become a wanted figure for the authorities.

Police stopped the car in which Mandela was travelling on 5 August 1962 near Howick. He was using the alias David Motsamayi, but the arrest ended his period underground. He was later prosecuted for leaving the country illegally and inciting workers to strike.

People sometimes confuse this arrest with the later Rivonia arrests. Mandela was captured in a roadside operation near Howick, whereas the 1963 raid at Liliesleaf Farm captured other senior activists and led to the Rivonia Trial. Mandela was already imprisoned by then.
