Where was Guy Fawkes imprisoned after his arrest?
Answer
Tower of London
Answer
Tower of London
After his arrest, Guy Fawkes was imprisoned in the Tower of London. He was brought there on 6 November 1605, the day after officials discovered him guarding gunpowder beneath the House of Lords.
The Tower was one of England’s most important royal prisons, used for political, religious and state prisoners. Fawkes was held there while the authorities investigated the wider conspiracy and searched for his fellow plotters. King James I authorised the use of increasingly severe torture to force him to disclose information; Fawkes eventually signed confessions naming himself and other conspirators.
The Tower is sometimes mistaken for an ordinary prison such as Newgate, but it was a royal fortress as well as a prison. Fawkes was later taken from the Tower to Westminster Hall for trial. He was convicted of high treason and executed in Old Palace Yard on 31 January 1606.
