Where was Guru Tegh Bahadur executed?

Guru Tegh Bahadur was executed at Chandni Chowk in Delhi on 11 November 1675.

The ninth Sikh Guru was publicly beheaded during the reign of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Sikh tradition places the execution near the Kotwali, close to the Sunehri Masjid in the Chandni Chowk area. The location was then a major market square near the Red Fort, which explains why “Red Fort” sometimes appears as a mistaken answer: it identifies the nearby landmark, not the usual canonical execution site.

Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib now commemorates the place where Guru Tegh Bahadur was beheaded. According to Sikh tradition, Bhai Jaita carried the Guru’s severed head to Anandpur, while Bhai Lakhi Shah Vanjara secretly took away the body and cremated it by setting his house alight. Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib marks the cremation site in Delhi.

Accounts of the political and religious reasons for the execution differ across Sikh, Persian, and modern scholarly sources. The location, however, is conventionally identified as Chandni Chowk.
