Where was Georgia O'Keeffe's first solo exhibition held in 1917?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe's first solo exhibition was held at the 291 gallery in New York in 1917. The gallery was run by Alfred Stieglitz and was formally associated with his influential gallery at 291 Fifth Avenue.

The exhibition presented a group of O'Keeffe's charcoal drawings and watercolors. These works were notable for their abstract treatment of natural forms and for their departure from the academic realism that had shaped much of her training. Stieglitz had already shown some of her drawings at the gallery in 1916.

The 1917 show helped establish O'Keeffe within New York's modernist art circle. It also began a long, complicated collaboration with Stieglitz, who became her husband in 1924 and photographed her repeatedly. O'Keeffe later became wary of interpretations that reduced her art to biography or symbolism.

The gallery name can cause confusion because Stieglitz later operated another New York space called An American Place. That later gallery was important too, but it was not the venue for O'Keeffe's first solo exhibition.
