Georgia O’Keeffe was born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, in 1887.

She was born on November 15, 1887, to Francis Calyxtus O’Keeffe and Ida Totto O’Keeffe, the second of seven children. Her family lived on a dairy farm near Sun Prairie, a rural setting that exposed her early to the shapes and colors of the natural world.

O’Keeffe began art lessons as a child and later studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League of New York. Although she became closely associated with New Mexico, she did not grow up there; she first visited the state in 1917 and later made it her permanent home.

Sun Prairie is near Madison, Wisconsin. Her birthplace is sometimes confused with Santa Fe, where the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum is located, or Abiquiú, where she lived for many years.
