Where was Caravan founded?

Caravan was founded in Kent, England, in 1968. The progressive rock band emerged from the Canterbury area, a musical scene known for adventurous, jazz-influenced rock and what later became called the Canterbury scene.

The founding lineup consisted of former Wilde Flowers members Pye Hastings, Richard Sinclair, David Sinclair, and Richard Coughlan. Wilde Flowers had already connected several musicians who would become important figures in Canterbury progressive rock, including members associated with Soft Machine.

Caravan was originally based in Whitstable, Kent, near Canterbury. The band later moved to London after signing with Verve Records, but its musical identity remained closely linked to its Kent and Canterbury origins. Its early sound blended rock with jazz, psychedelia, and complex arrangements.
