Where was Bob Marley born?

The story behind the answer

Bob Marley was born in Nine Mile, Jamaica.

Nine Mile is a rural community in Saint Ann Parish, in the northern part of Jamaica. Marley was born there on 6 February 1945 and spent part of his childhood in the area before moving to Kingston with his mother, Cedella Booker. The community later became closely associated with Marley’s life and legacy.

A common mix-up is Kingston, because Kingston was the city where Marley developed his musical career. He lived in Trench Town, recorded with local producers, formed the Wailers, and later based important professional activities there. Kingston is therefore central to his career, but it was not his birthplace.

The Nine Mile site includes a mausoleum containing Marley’s remains and has become a destination for visitors interested in his music, family history, and Rastafarian beliefs. It is also associated with Marley’s mother and other members of his family.
